                DOPPELGANGER (umlaut on the A)

Entering the lonely house with my wife,
I saw him for the first time

POLITICAL PALINDROMES
by Mark Saltveit

BILL CLINTON:

        The apologetic Democrat says:
Not nil: Clinton

Re: media coverage of the new administration
So snide! Pork cuts are not nil. Clinton era stuck, roped in. SOS!

Slapdash, self-royal Clinton's not nil. Clay or flesh, sad pals?

Emil: "Slam it. Power bastion not nil, Clinton. No, it's a brew -
optimal slime."

AL GORE:

        Rush Limbaugh says:
Flog sad loser Al. Gore, zero, glares, old as golf.

        Tipper replies:
Rot! Aid Al Gore - hero, gladiator.

        The press is undecided:
Red now, rotund Al Gore? Zero, glad nut, or wonder?

But all agree his charisma is the key. Republican version:
Aide malarial from Al Gore: zero glamor, flair ala media.

        Democratic version:
Aide malarial from Al Gore: hero glamor, flair ala media.

Politically incorrect version, from aide's point of view:
Nips delirial from Al Gore: zero glamor, flair. I led spin.

DONNA SHALALA:

The reader is left to imagine the context of this palindrome.
"Al! Al! " "Ah, Shalala!"
OR
   "Al! Al! Ah." - Shalala

BOB DOLE

Liar emits a snaky Dole melody, Kansas time. Rail!

Resold Dole - eel, odd loser!

        Dole vs. Kennedy:
Despot Bob tops Ed.

Derail sad Dole - crap parcel, odd as liar Ed.

Star nuts stun rats.
        -- David Alpert <collins@powdml.enet.dec.com>

I tan, I mull, I live on no evil illuminati.

Segal lives on nose villages.

Macro frog irks - I risk rigor for cam.

I make Emperor E.T.'s nominee ten into borg robot nineteen. I monster,
o rep? Meek am I!
-- Geoff Bailey (Fred the Wonder Worm) <ftww@cs.su.oz.au>

And Merlyn LeRoy made a very good extension of the previously published
Idi Amin 'drome: To Idi A. Dada - a dad, a idiot.

Let's go to the next level:

Wary alpine zen - I play raw!

No, I tan - I cull a hallucination.

God damn! I - evil asserts - impugn a bastion of rabies use. I barf!
O, no, it's a bang-up mistress, alive in Maddog!

[For you non-Americans who don't read Bukowski, et. al., Maddog is a
brand of high-alcohol wine popular among street drunkards in America.]
        -- Mark Saltveit <msalt@well.sf.ca.us>

Emil, a sleepy baby peels a lime.
No, Mel, a sleepy baby peels a lemon.

Dennis, Nell, Edna, a Mr. Idi Amin Dada, Dad-n-I, Maid Irma, and Ellen
sinned.
        -- Paul Terpstra <terpstra@geoserv.isgs.uiuc.edu>

Oh, cameras are macho.
K.L. at Sun got EMACS, so boss came to GNU's talk.
        -- Felix Lee <flee@cse.psu.edu>

He's won ken of ill etiology; named a mere hoot, and no stats on DNA,
too. Here made many go, "Lo!, I tell if one knows, eh?"
-- Mark Isaak <isaak@aurora.com> (written in honor of a
           Creationist)

Charles Seife (seife-charles@math.yale.edu) wrote two palindromes:
"Oh, God, no! Sununu's on dog ho!"
        "Slap, strap Sununu's parts, pals!"

The best Sununu palindrome is still the one from Herb Caen's column
just before the imperious chief of staff lost his job:
        "Wonder if Sununu's fired now?"
        -- Mark Saltveit <msalt@well.sf.ca.us>

Biff the Magic Dragon wrote (and Tom Magliery solved) this palindrome
puzzle:
God! Nate ate a Tibetan dog!
        -- Mark Saltveit

I think that should be God! Nate BIT a tibetan dog!
        -- Luis Jose Maysonet <luism@tucson.Princeton.EDU>

By the way, my version of the Mal Waldron puzzle was a little
different:
Sin? Net slam, sir, is Mal's tennis.
(reads a little better than not, on Mal's tennis)

Lana C. LaDaug was I ere I saw Guadalcanal.

Here's a palindrome that I got from a friend who got it from someone
at Juilliard in New York. It concerns the time the famous soloist
Paganini had sponges pop out of his violin and was so embarrassed he
stormed off stage...;-)

[ Editor: Dan Hoey's note on the history of the Panama palindromes,
included in the lists of Andrew Rogers and John Jensen: ]

As far as I know, the first person to put a cat in the canal was Jim
Saxe, in his 9 October 1983 plan file.

    A man, a plan, a cat, a canal -- Panama?

Guy Jacobson added several items later that year.

    A man, a plan, a cat, a ham, a yak, a yam, a hat, a canal -- Panama!

Guy's palindrome appears on page 127 of COMMON LISP, THE LANGUAGE (page
170 of the 2nd edition). The 2nd edition of COMMON LISP, THE LANGUAGE
also contains the remarkable:

A man, a plan, a canoe, pasta, heros, rajahs, a coloratura, maps,
snipe, percale, macaroni, a gag, a banana bag, a tan, a tag, a
banana bag again (or a camel), a crepe, pins, Spam, a rut, a Rolo,
cash, a jar, sore hats, a peon, a canal -- Panama!

which is presumably the work of Guy Steele, the book's author.

I dredged up the problem in 1984, and discovered the following 540-word
version with the help of a computer program that I wrote. [ Editor:
the 540-word palindrome given in the entry above. ]

This was done with the Unix spelling dictionary and a fairly
simple-minded program. With a better word list and a smarter program
I'm sure the palindrome could be ten times as long.

I am somewhat concerned that people have been redistributing these
palindromes without attribution. Please don't do so. And if you get a
copy of my palindrome without my name on it, I would appreciate it if
you mention my objection to whoever sends it to you.

In the middle ages, such constructions were more common than they are
today, especially in Italy. One of the more outstanding exemplars of
this tradition of naming was Ordelaffo Falier, doge of Venice from 1102
to 1118. He was respected and well-beloved in his time; chiefly
remembered today for having been doge during the first of Venice's
catastrophic floods -- the one in 1109. At first glance, his name's
secret is not revealed to us, but the Latin form of the family name is
FALEDRUS and, also in Latin, the most common contemporary spelling of
his first name is URDELAFUS, with ORDELAFUS as a close second -- hence
ORDELAFUS FALEDRUS. The name is still borne by members of the Falier
family, who are to be found in largish numbers in Venice and its
environs, but this is more in memory of the doge and his fame than from
any desire to perpetuate a palindromic name that is little recognized
today.

George Katele <gkatele@interaccess.com> wrote:
>>If I'm not mistaken, there was a whole novel that was one palindrome.

If it's the one I think it is, it's not a novel, just a short story,
and I used to be able to recite it. Here goes:

Professor Jones had been working in his lab. "I have discovered
the secret of time", he told his daughter one day. "Time is a field.
This machine I have made can manipulate, even reverse that field."
Pushing a button as he spoke, he said "this should make time run
backwards run time make should this" said he, spoke he as button a
pushing. Field that, reverse even, manipulate can made have I machine
this. Field a is time." Day one daughter his told he, "time of secret
the discovered have I". Lab his in working been had Jones Professor.

I'm sorry I don't remember the author- it was one of the better known
ones like Sprague [Editor: "Spraugue" in the original] DeCamp or
somebody. We had a lot of fun with it; it has a cadence when you
actually recite it that makes it easy to memorize.

        by Felicia Lamport

        The learned men of Rome
        could turn a palindrome
but they were not the first.

        For Adam, says the myth,
        began conversing with
        a sentence that reversed:
        "Madam, I'm Adam"
        seemed
        a phrase to be esteemed
        the moment it was popped.
But that was not to be
        - his lady instantly
        said
        "Eve"
        which left it topped.

        Anonymous, the most
        prolific bard, can boast
        of being host
        to these:

"Was it a car or a cat I saw ?"

        "I prefer pi."

        "Some men interpret nine memos."

"Lewd did I live, evil I did dwel."

        "Sex at noon taxes."

        "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama !"

"Stop, murder us not, tonsured rumpots !"

"Able was I, ere I saw elba."

"Straw ? No, too stupid a fad. I put soot on warts."

"Doc, note: I dissent. A fast never prevents a fatness. I diet
        on cod."

"Kay, a red nude, peeped under a yak."

        and

"Sit on a potato pan, Otis !"

What span, what palindromic bliss !
        I've wrung the alphabet
        repeatedly to get
        a Janus-phrase so spry
        at backwards somersaults.
But as each hope turns false,
        in words, alas, drown I.

No, the whole thing is not a palindrome, but it contains most of the
more famous ones. And one or two (or three) not-so-famous, hidden
ones.

[ Editor: Martin Gardner on Leigh Mercer and J. A. Lindon, quoted by
Mark Brader: ]

From Martin Gardner's 6th collection:

# In my opinion the finest English palindrome continues to be
# "A man, a plan, a canal -- Panama!" It has recently been
# attributed to James Thurber, but it was composed many years
# ago by Leigh Mercer of London, one of the greatest living
# palindromists. An unpublished Mercer palindrome, which is
# also something of a tongue twister, is "Top step's pup's pet
# spot."
# Another Mercer palindrome, remarkable for both its length
# and naturalness, is "Straw? No, too stupid a fad. I put
# soot on warts." J.A. Lindon of Weybridge, England, is
# another master palindromist who turns them out by the
# hundreds. Who would suspect a palindrome if, in a novel,
# he came on the following Lindon sentence: "Norma is as
# selfless as I am, Ron." Lindon has also composed a large
# number of palindromes in which words rather than letters
# are the units. For instance: "So patient a doctor to try
# to doctor a patient so" and "Amusing is that company of fond
# people bores people fond of company that is amusing."

The collection was published in 1971 and the column apparently
originally appeared in September 1964.

Dog Sees Ada

Adam? I'm Adam! Moody, me? Dam it (sic)! Are we all? I know Ada. I
saw Ada.

Ah, a short symbol to no denial: Eyes omit naive dog-desserts. Evil
right, old-name diets. A tree-bonnet foliate, relax: If Ada did pull
order, read. Ada had a foe, fire-rose facade tool, too-hot yard Iraq:
arid Elijah at a haj. I lead a reviled noose, Canadian!

It is coded, on a pistol by Rome, "Man is an ardor pelt, tactiler, sad."
A tacit sin, a rude Roman enema. I ran; Agnus Dei, Dada lived on.

I, a gap, a zero monad, Ada's nose: "Rift on, evil royal pilots!" I
pass a nasal acolyte. I pondered, now idle.

His flack: late no-no's, tits, a cow. Two-cow, to tenor of God! A sin
is a sign, ignoble udder-cases! La femme fatale gnawed at a
phone-post, also lost call, eh? She'll act solo, slats open. Oh, pat a
dew-angel at a femme false. Sacred duel, bonging is a sin; is a dog?
For one to two-cow two, cast it so none talk calfs!

I held, I wondered. No piety local as an ass. A pistol (I play, or
live not) fires on sad Ada. "No more!" Zap! Again. O devil! Ada
died, sung an aria. Men, enamored, uranistic at Ada's relit cattle
prod, ran as in a memory blot.

Sip an ode, Doc; sit in. Aid an ace, soon deliver Ada! Elijah!

At a haj, I led Iraq (arid ray to hoot), looted a cafe sore, rife of
Ada. Had Ada erred? Roll up. Did Ada fix ale, retail? Often. "No
beer taste," I demand, "loth girl! I've stressed! Go, deviant!"

"I mosey!"

"Elaine, Do not lob my Stroh's!"

Aha! Ada was I; Ada won. Kill a ewe, racist.

I made my doom: "Madam, I'm ADA!"

Ada sees God.

[ Editor: English items from Manfred Immler's second palindrome
summary for the LINGUIST List (June 1995) that are not already in this
entry. ]

From William Irvine's "Madam I'm Adam and other palindromes":

Egad! An adage!

From "An Almanac of Words at Play" by Willard Espy:

Do nine men interpret? Nine med, I nod.

This is a poem by J. A. Lindon where each line, and the title, is a
palindrome:

HA! ON, ON, O NOAH!
Eel-fodder, stack-cats red do flee,
Unglad, I tar a tidal gnu,
I tip away a wapiti,
Ewer of miry rim for ewe.

(It doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's reasonably grammatical.) But
better than that is the following poem, where not each line, but the
whole thing, not including the title (450 letters!) is a palindrome.
It was written by Howard W. Bergerson, and it makes surprising sense:

THE FADED BLOOMERS' RHAPSODY

Flee to me, remote elf --- Sal a dewan desired;
Now is a Late-Petal era.
We fade: lucid Iris, red Rose of Sharon;
Goldenrod a silly ram ate.
Wan olives teem (ah, Satan lives!);
A star eyes pale Roses.

Revel, big elf on a mayonnaise man ---
A tinsel baton-dragging nice elf too.
Lisp, oh sibyl, dragging Nola along;
Niggardly bishops I loot.
Fleecing niggard notables Nita names,
I annoy a Man of Legible Verse.

So relapse, ye rats,
As evil Natasha meets Evil
On a wet, amaryllis-adorned log.
Norah's foes' orders (I ridiculed a few) are late, Pet.
Alas, I wonder! Is Edna wed?
Alas --- flee to me, remote elf.

And the following is a mock interview with "Professor R. Osseforp,
holder of the Emor D. Nilap Chair in Palindromology at Harvard", where
the answer to each question is a palindrome:

"And what about your new novel, could you tell me the title?"
"Dennis Sinned."
"Intriguing. What is the plot?"
"Dennis and Edna sinned."
"I see. Is there more to it than that?"
"Dennis Krats and Edna Stark sinned."
"Now it all becomes clear. Tell me, what kind of car are you driving
nowadays?"
"A Toyota."
"Naturally. And how about your colleague, Prof. Nustad?"
"Nustad? A Datsun."
"And his wife May?"
"Aha! May? A Yamaha!"

[ Editor: from a summary of palindromes sent in response to a request

  December 1992.  Only palindromes not already in this entry are given;
close variants of ones already here are left out. ]

Tarzan raised a Desi Arnaz rat.

Tarzan raised Desi Arnaz' rat.

If I had a hi-fi

A man, a plan, a canoe, pasta, hero's, rajahs, a coloratura,
maps, snipe, percale, macaroni, a gag, a banana bag, a tan,
a tag, a banana bag again, or: a camel, a crepe, pins, spam,
a rut, a Rolo, cash, a jar, sore hats, a peon, a canal, Panama!

Here is some information about a few palindromes related to the one
you mention. As far as I know, the first person to put a cat in the
canal was Jim Saxe, in his 9 October 1983 plan file.

    A man, a plan, a cat, a canal; Panama?

Guy Jacobson added several items later that year.

    A man, a plan, a cat, a ham, a yak, a yam, a hat, a canal--Panama!

Guy's palindrome appears on page 127 of COMMON LISP, THE LANGUAGE
(page 170 of the 2nd edition). The 2nd edition of COMMON LISP, THE
LANGUAGE also contains the remarkable:

A man, a plan, a canoe, pasta, heros, rajahs, a coloratura, maps,
snipe, percale, macaroni, a gag, a banana bag, a tan, a tag, a
banana bag again (or a camel), a crepe, pins, Spam, a rut, a Rolo,
    cash, a jar, sore hats, a peon, a canal--Panama!

which is presumably the work of Guy Steele, the book's author.

I dredged up the problem in 1984, and discovered the following 540-word
version with the help of a computer program that I wrote.

[ Editor: Dan Hoey's 540-word palindrome, already given above, is
  omitted here. ]

This was done with the Unix spelling dictionary and a fairly
simple-minded program. With a better word list and a smarter program
I'm sure the palindrome could be ten times as long.

I am somewhat concerned that people have been redistributing these
palindromes without attribution. Please don't do so. And if you get
a copy of my palindrome without my name on it, I would appreciate it
if you mention my objection to whoever sends it to you.

THE END

Professor Jones had been working on time theory for many years. "And I have
found the key equation", he told his daughter one day. "Time is a field.
This machine I have made can manipulate, even reverse, that field."
Pushing a button as he spoke, he said, "This should make time run backward
run time make should this." said he, spoke he as button a pushing.
"Field that, reverse even, manipulate can made have I machine this.
Field a is time." Day one daughter his told he, "Equation key the found
have I an". Years many for theory time on working been had Jones Professor.

The Scene:
A snake plantation in the Antebellum South. Snakes on Buns, the favorite
delicacy of the locals is also the leading export at the nearby seaport.
Unfortunately, the Civil War has begun and it is only a matter of time
before the U.S. Navy blockades the port.

Dramatis Personae:
     The Master of the Plantation
Snub-nose Kansas Sam (a hired hand)

     A Slave.

The Script:

Slave: "Massa! Snakes-on-Buns Embargo!"

Palindromic Poems

     "To I, Lester"

     A cotton eve,
     O, trap! Eden!
     O, television sad as night.

I wonder if senile sirs tell war days,
     Words selfless, drowsy...

A drawl lets rise lines fired
     [No!]
     With gin:
     Sad as "no" is,
     I've let one depart.
     O, eve--
     Not to care...

Palindromic Computer Programs

This is not only a palindromic program, it's actually a palindromic
self-replicating program. That means that if you take your C compiler,
compile this code, and then run it, the output of the program is
exactly the code of the program.

You'll need to remove the newline characters (i.e. make it one long
line), and you may need to add #include <stdio.h>, which slightly
blemishes the program, but it really is still incredibly cool. (By the
way, I didn't write this, someone mailed it to me...)

[ Editor: palindromes in a novel, mailed to Chris Cole in October
1997. ]

In Spider Robinson's 1996 novel "Callahan's Legacy" (Tor paperback,
1997, ISBN 0-812-55035-8), the 12 chapters have the following titles:

 1. Too hot to hoot
 2. Too far, Edna: we wander afoot
 3. Mr. Alarm
 4. I, madam, I made radio! So I dared! Am I mad? Am I?
 5. Ed, undo bod, nude
 6. Rise to vote, sir!
 7. Party trap
 8. Rettebs, I flahd noces, eh? Ttu, but the second half is better...
 9. Now, Ned, I am a maiden won...
10. Er... "Om" more!
11. Pop, Mom, pop!
12. Are we not drawn forward to a new era?

Most of them actually do have something to do with the chapter
content. For example, a birth occurs in chapter 11. I particularly
like that one!

Note that there are only 10 genuine palindromes, as #8 is a joke and
#12 isn't a palindrome.

One of the characters in the book is real-life mad(?) scientist Nikola
Tesla. In chapter 4, he speaks the title of the chapter, and other
characters speak the following lines. The first few (three, I
presume) of these are acknowledged as not original.

Go hang a salami; I'm a lasagna hog.
        Wonder if Sununu's fired now?
Lewd did I live; evil did I dwell. [sic]

WHEN IN PALINDROME

Did you know that Mr. Sterling, the director of all those "Twilight
Zone" episodes, used to take his summer vacations in Las Vegas, selling
trinkets in a little booth? It's true! He was known as

Rod: Nevada vendor

Okay, so we made that up. But we wanted to give you an example of a
palindrome--a phrase reading the same way forwards and backwards. And
now we'd like to send you on a round-trip journey. To be specific, we
want you to write us a palindrome that contains the name of a
geographical location. This location may be a town, city, state,
country, national park, notorious tourist trap, or whatever you choose.

Palindromes are tricky little devils to write, and we're not expecting
full sentences, flawless grammar, or complete lucidity. The celebrated
palindromes

A man, a plan, a canal--Panama!

and

Niagara, O roar again!

are famous for a good reason. They're exceptionally tidy and
comprehensible. Given the tough constraints, a palindromist is lucky
to make as much sense as

Nog eroded Oregon

(which seems to imply that a Christmas beverage has washed away an
entire state in the Northwestern U.S.), or

Kayak salad: Alaska yak

(which evokes a very dubious luncheon menu in a very precarious
setting).

So don't be afraid to let your head spin. When you've written your
place-containing palindrome, send it to CoxRathvon@aol.com by e-mail.
Multiple entries are okay, but for our convenience pack all your
'dromes into one letter whenever possible, and please don't use
attached files. Senders of the three palindromes we like best will
each receive our heartfelt cry of "Yay!" plus 5 free America Online
hours (if they are AOL members) and a free book from The Atlantic's
Store.

"When in Palindrome" will remain open through Friday, August 23.
Results will be posted at the Atlantic on Friday, August 30.

--EC and HR, who always look both ways

P.S. If you like cryptic crosswords, visit our "Puzzles and Word
Games" folder on the Atlantic's America Online message board (keyword
ATLANTIC) and join the handful of rather crazed clue-writers who are
already at play there! Post clues of your own and see if the gang can
solve 'em!

When in Palindrome Results

"So many dynamos!" That's what we were tempted to shout as the
entries for this palindrome contest filled our mailbox. With an
assignment so tough, we never imagined your Wordplay Muses would
cooperate so beautifully.

"Egad! An adage!" That's another thing we almost exclaimed, whenever
someone's palindrome approximated a pithy, memorable (but sometimes
slightly cracked) maxim. For example, RKremer14 seemed to sum up
Shakespeare's lackluster appeal in North Africa by writing: "Bard's
reign at Tangier's drab." Contestant RDH9995 articulated a philosophy
of ancient Greece as follows: "Sparta's one rule: Lure no satraps."
And BALD MT explained singer McEntire's strange popularity among the
older males of Scotland with the pronouncement: "Aberdeen's dads need
Reba."

"Top Spot?" We went back and forth trying to decide which three
palindromes were our very favorites. We appreciated the punchy ones,
including real-life locales such as "Apollo, PA" (an actual suburb of
Pittsburgh, documented by contestant REENAS), "Wassamassaw" (a swamp
north of Charleston, NC, noted by LionInOil), and "Yreka Bakery" (a
California shop, submitted by AEmbry5616). But we also admired the
daring of contestants who used long or unusual place names in their
palindromes. Worthy of special mention in this regard is
guy@research.att.com, whose creation echoes the query "Where in the
world is Carmen Sandiego?" from our recent "Question and Anagram"
contest. Noting that he wanted a palindrome beginning and ending on
the letter Q, Guy wrote: "Q: Arizona, Ixelles, Omaha, Moselle, Xi'an,
Oz, Iraq?"

By the way, our best laugh of the contest came from Unhunk, who said,
"I warned my father not to take up mountain climbing but he refused to
listen," leading to the palindrome: "Saw Pop at Alps. SPLAT! A Pop
was."

After viewing, reviewing, and retroviewing the entries, we finally
settled on Leroy2001, LionInOil, and OberOber as our top-fave
palindromists. OberOber's entries arrived in the form of a palindromic
newspaper; our prize-winning selection reproduces his sports section

A new order began, a more Roman age bred Rowena.

The ancient Greeks often put "Nispon anomimata mi monan opsin" on
fountains. It translates as "Wash the sin as well as the face." The
Romans admired palindromes, too, as demonstrated by "In girum imus
nocte et consumimur igni" (We enter the circle after dark and are
consumed by fire"), which was said to describe the action of moths.

An illegitimate palindrome:

Doctor Reubenstein was shocked and dismayed when he answered the
ringing telephone, only to hear a strange, metallic, alien voice say,
"Yasec iovn eilacilla temeg! Nartsa raehoty lnoenoh pelet gnig,
nirehtde rewsnaehn ehw. Deya! Msid! Dnadek cohssaw nietsne buerro,

[ Editor: the NPR Weekend Edition listener challenge of 13 October 1996,
as summarized by Richard Renner. The winning entries were not in the
collected material. ]

The listener challenge for the next two weeks is to find a creative
word palindrome. A word palindrome is a phrase in which the words of
the phrase, taken as units, read the same forward and backward. Will
is inspired here by Michael Donner's book, I Love Me, Volume I, which
Will called a letter palindrome (not by the standards inspired by this
editor's last name). Here are some familiar word palindromes:

All for one and one for all.
King, are you glad you are king?
So patient a doctor to doctor a patient so.

Answers will be judged on originality, cleverness and naturalness of
phrasing.

[ Editor: from the rec-puzzles.org wiki page "Yreka Bakery" (question:
"What are some places with palindromic names?"), on the Yreka Bakery and
Yrella Gallery listed above. ]

As of September 2005, there no longer is a Yreka Bakery, nor is there a
Yrella Gallery. Here is the report from a researcher:

I called the Yreka Chamber of Commerce this morning and asked a
helpful woman about these businesses. Feel free to call and verify
the information, but, uh, don't all do it at once.

The Yreka Bakery is gone. Within the last twenty years, new owners
had renamed it after their family, then newer owners restored the
palindromic name, but now there is no longer a bakery in its
location. "I think it's a beauty parlor now", the woman said.

The Yrella Gallery, which had been next door to the bakery, is also
gone, no longer cashing in on the fame of its neighbor.

I asked if either of the new establishments have "cool names". She
  said "no".

Here are some other businesses with palindromic names:
Elite Tile (San Francisco, California, USA)
Lion Oil (El Dorado, Arkansas, USA)
