Problem
Is "airvent" a valid English word? Is the solid spelling "airvent" an accepted word, or must it be written as "air vent" or "air-vent"? Would it count in Scrabble, word puzzles or careful writing, and would it be acceptable as a crossword entry?
Show solution
Short answer: Not as one solid word in a standard dictionary. The
accepted form is the two-word phrase "air vent". "Airvent" is a common
run-together spelling that you will find in real use, but no standard
dictionary lists it, and in our word list it is not canonical.
Reasoning and what I checked:
1. "air vent" (two words). This form is in the list, but only at
grade 2, which means it appears only in the big words.all list and
not in the graded canonical list (grades 0 and 1). So even the
spaced phrase is not canonical here. Standard dictionaries treat it
as an ordinary noun phrase, air + vent, and many do not give it an
entry at all.
2. "airvent" (solid). This is not in words.graded, so it is not
canonical. It does turn up in usage data:
Google Web 2006 n-grams 6,256
Google Books 2020 3,949
Usenet 4
It also appears in Gooch's BIGDICT. One of the sources there is
marked "OED2 text hyphenated". That suggests the OED's running text
contains "air-vent", which our lookup shows as "airvent". The
hyphenated form "air-vent" itself is not in the database. The Broda
and XWord Info crossword lists, and OpenSubtitles, also include it.
3. "airvents" (plural, solid). This is also not canonical. It has
2,630 hits in Google Web 2006 and also appears in the British
National Corpus.
4. A pattern search of the graded list for air, an optional
character, then vent or vents found only one entry: "air vent",
at grade 2.
Conclusion: Write "air vent". Older texts sometimes spell it
"air-vent". "Airvent" is a real spelling variant that people use, and
some crossword constructors' lists include it, but no dictionary
supports it as a solid word. So for Scrabble, word puzzles or careful
writing, it does not count. In a crossword, AIRVENT works as an
entry for the phrase AIR VENT, the same way any multi-word answer
does.

[ Editor: "Our word list", its grades and words.graded refer to the
answerer's own lexicon, not to a published dictionary. The claim
that no standard dictionary lists "airvent" rests on that list and
the sources named above, not on a direct check of dictionaries; the
BIGDICT/OED2 evidence supports only the hyphenated "air-vent". ]
