[ Editor: the following was posted to npl-folk@puzzlers.org on 25 November 2002 under the subject "Mystery of the Crossword". ] The Japanese writer Ken Toyama has published the latest book about the history of the crossword puzzle, two weeks ago in Tokyo. It is a small size book with 208 pages. Curiously, it is the first book about the puzzle to show a photo of Arthur Wynne. "The Strange World of the Crossword Puzzle" and "What's Gnu? A History of the Crossword Puzzle" lacked this feature. It is also the first to show in detail how the "crossword craze" evolved in a country outside America and Europe (in case, Japan). And it shows an image of a "Blended Squares" puzzle, one of the many WILLz' findings. I have scanned five images and uploaded them to this page: http://www.palavrascruzadas.com/mystery/mystery.html There you will find links to Ken's site, to the publisher's site and to a Windows Media Player clip presented by the author. -- Sergio Barcellos Ximenes <sximenes@compuland.com.br>
