Problem

Find the next number in this series:

0, 1, 2, 720!

The ! is factorial, not punctuation. It's from a book by Douglas
Hofstadter [Editor: "Hofstader" in the original], _Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies_.

-- Rachel <rhysel@aol.com>, April 1995
Show solution
The n-th term of the sequence is the number n-1 followed by n-1
factorial signs. So it starts with 0 followed by no factorials, which
is 0, then goes 1! = 1, 2!! = 2! = 2, 3!!! = 6!! = 720!, and so on. So
the answer is 4!!!! = 24!!!, which is pretty big! The problem would be
more difficult to solve, if you did not give the clue of putting a
factorial sign in the problem - i.e. it should go, what is the next
term in the sequence:

0, 1, 2,

The sequence appears to be 1!!!, 2!!!, 3!!! (= 720!), so the fourth
term would be 4!!!.

-- Stacy Friedman <safriedm@husc7.harvard.edu>

Ouch! Ow! Blammo! Incorrect! :)

0!!! is 1, not 0.
